Worship Is the Whole Fight

We’ve talked about being formed instead of neutral, about growth being slow, about loves running deeper than beliefs, and about the ambient water we’re all swimming in. Here’s where it all lands: every single human being is a worshiper. Not might be. Is. The only question left is what, or who, you’re worshiping.

You Were Built to Worship

Worship isn’t a genre of music or a portion of a Sunday service. It’s the direction your whole life points — what you organize your time around, sacrifice for, defend when it’s questioned, and look to for identity and security. Everybody worships something. The atheist, the executive, the addict, and the deacon are all worshiping. The only real difference between them is the object.

Give It Everything, Or Give It Nothing

Jesus was asked once which commandment mattered most, and he didn’t hedge.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.

— Matthew 22:37–38

Notice the math: all your heart, all your soul, all your mind. God doesn’t compete for a slice of your worship alongside career and comfort and approval. He asks for the whole thing, because he knows that whatever gets the rest of your worship will eventually own you.

Every Other God Runs Out

That’s not God being possessive for his own sake. It’s God being honest about how the universe works. Every substitute god — achievement, approval, control, pleasure — promises to satisfy and then quietly starts demanding more than it gives. Only the true God can hold the full weight of a human heart without being crushed by it, and without crushing you in return. So the fight underneath every other fight in the Christian life is this one: who or what is actually sitting on the throne of your worship this week?
