Here’s something I wish someone had told me twenty years ago: you are being formed right now. Not might be, not could be if you’re not careful — you are, this very week, being shaped into a particular kind of person. The only question is whether you’re paying attention to who’s doing the shaping.
There’s No Off Switch
We like to imagine our character as a fixed thing we either have or don’t, and formation as an optional extra for people who are “into that.” But that’s not how people actually work. Every habit, every screen you scroll, every relationship you keep, every story you let yourself believe about who you are — all of it is training you toward something. There’s no neutral gear. You’re either being formed toward Christ or away from him. Passivity isn’t a pause button. It’s still a direction.
Paul’s Two Verbs
Paul gets at exactly this in his letter to the Romans:
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
— Romans 12:2
Notice both of those are things being done to you — conformed, transformed. Paul isn’t asking whether you’ll be shaped. He’s asking by what. The world is already pressing you into its mold every single day through advertising, comparison, ambition, fear. The only real choice is whether you’ll let something stronger reshape you back.
So Start Paying Attention
Over the next few posts I want to walk through what real, lasting formation actually looks like — why it’s slower than we want, what it means to guard your loves and not just your beliefs, and what it takes to renew a mind in a culture that never stops trying to conform it. But it all starts here, with an honest look in the mirror: something is forming you right now. The good news is you get to have a say in what.
